Photosynthesis generates oxygen both above the surface and beneath it (surface of a body of water). The visual proof for this is credited to the Austrian physician Jan Ingenhousz in the 18th centrury. By putting a willow tree branch under water, he could clearly see that the leaves and stems produced tiny bubbles. On the photo above, this process is illustrated by the plant Myriophyllum aquaticum, also known as "Parrot feather." Photo taken in Gothenburg, Sweden on July 1, 2006.
